Processing Medical Experiences, Illness, and Hospital Trauma: Healing Mind & Body

Medical experiences can shape how we understand safety, trust, and our relationship with our own bodies.

For some people, these experiences involve a single medical event or diagnosis. For others, they may include long hospital stays, ongoing treatment, memories or experiences of childhood illness, or repeated medical procedures.

Even when treatment is successful, sometimes the emotional impact of medical experiences can remain long after the physical recovery or change in environment.

You might notice this showing up as:

  • Anxiety around hospitals, medical or dental appointments, or medical settings

  • Difficulty trusting your body after illness or injury

  • Lingering fear following a diagnosis or procedure

  • Grief connected to illness, loss, or medical uncertainty

  • Feeling overwhelmed by the stress of caregiving or supporting a loved one

Therapy offers a space to process these experiences and reconnect with a sense of safety and stability.

Who is Medical and Body-Based Emotional Support For?

This work may be helpful for:

Individuals processing medical trauma or hospitalization

Children and teens coping with medical procedures or hospital experiences

Individuals experiencing health-related anxiety or fear of medical settings

People living with chronic illness or ongoing health conditions

Siblings of children receiving medical care who feel overlooked or overwhelmed

Parents navigating the emotional impact of a child’s diagnosis or treatment

Families processing grief, loss, or bereavement related to illness or medical experiences

Parents facing their own diagnosis while navigating how to support, talk with, and care for their children and families

Families navigating new diagnoses or long-term treatment plans

Caregivers supporting a loved one through illness while managing their own emotional stress

Medical experiences often affect the entire family system. Therapy can help create space to process those experiences together.

A Specialized Background in Psychosocial Medical Support

Before becoming a therapist, I worked as a Certified Child Life Specialist in multiple Level 1 trauma centers across Florida, Texas, California, and Arizona, supporting infants, toddlers, children, teens, and families through complex medical experiences.

My work included supporting patients and families in:

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU)

  • Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU)

  • Cardiovascular Intensive Care Units (CVICU)

  • Hematology and Oncology – both inpatient and outpatient

  • Emergency Departments

  • Trauma and Medical/Surgical Units

  • Radiology and Imaging/Diagnostic Procedures

  • Pediatric Inpatient Behavioral Health

In these settings, I provided developmentally-appropriate procedure preparation and support, education around new diagnoses, emotional and play-based support during hospitalization, and grief and bereavement care for children, siblings, and families.

These experiences deeply informed and shaped my understanding of the resilience of youth and families in the face of adversity, as well of how medical environments affect emotional wellbeing.

Medical treatment often focuses on the physical aspects of recovery. The emotional impact can sometimes be overlooked. Therapy provides a space where those experiences can be acknowledged, understood, and integrated into your story in a way that supports healing and resilience.

Healing extends beyond the body – it’s about finding emotional steadiness, resilience, and empowerment alongside physical care.

You don’t have to navigate medical experiences alone – you’re here with Hailee.
